Question of the Month

C.T. asks: Can a new smile make a bad nose or pointy chin look better? I want my teeth bonded to make all four upper front teeth almost the same length. I think this will help mask my pointy nose and chin and accentuate my eyes, which are large and considered attractive. Can this be done?!?

Dr. JG-E responds: One of the most important elements of a good smile design is to accentuate the positive facial features and minimize the negative ones. You can downplay a pointy chin or nose (or both) by accentuating the width of the upper teeth, not their length. The object is to create a horizontal band of teeth so the viewer's eye goes out from the center of the face and does not focus on the less attractive center (nose and/or chin). If you are currently sporting two extra-long upper central teeth, those teeth may be accentuating the long features in the center of your face.

The best smile design here is a gradual staircase effect from the center outward, with the two upper center teeth being longest, the lateral teeth just slightly shorter, and the cuspids just slightly shorter. I call it the "Cover Girl Smile." If your dentist raises the lateral or side teeth up too far, it will defeat your design; a look like a long vertical stripe on your face, accentuating the very features you wish to minimize.

Solutions: Bonding, porcelain laminates, or crowns depending on the dentist's preferences and the client's lifestyle choices.
