Chipping or cracking of teeth can happen for many different reasons and can have very different treatment options. As we age, teeth do as well, so the likelihood of tooth damage increases, however, tooth damage can happen at any age, so proper life long dental care and routine appointments are necessary.
Depending on the severity of the harm to the tooth, your suggested route for treatment will vary. Even for very small chips, an x-ray will probably be done to get a full understanding of the damage. Minor chips can potentially be sealed or repaired quickly, often without the need for anesthesia.
More massive trauma to teeth will require emergency evaluation. X-rays can help assess the extent of the damage and from there more expansive surgeries and repair techniques will be discussed. Pain medication can also be provided to curb the pain from injury if necessary.
Porcelain veneers and crowns are both potential options for repair. Dentistry has come such a long way in aesthetic procedures that when necessary for health reasons, these emergency repairs can improve your smile to even better than before the injury occurred.
