A dental bridge is device that is used as a replacement for missing or lost teeth and they also attach to the surrounding natural teeth. Bridges can be removable or permanently fixed by placing crowns on the adjacent natural teeth. Permanent bridges can also be affixed by bonding artificial teeth and natural teeth directly. Fixed bridges are more stable than removable bridges but removable bridges can be taken out and cleaned periodically.
Attaching bridges to the mouth usually takes a few procedures to be completed. First the teeth will be prepped through a process of removing a small amount of enamel on the sides of the gap. Following the enamel removal, impressions of the teeth are taken and sent to a laboratory to ensure proper fitment and shape to match the natural teeth. Once the completed bridges returned from the lab, they are permanently cemented to the natural teeth in the space where the missing teeth once were.
The main role of the teeth is to help us chew food for proper digestion but they also help us with speech and the alignment of our mouth/jaw. Missing teeth severely compromise oral function and bridges help to reinforce the surrounding teeth. Bridges can also restore proper speech, reduce the risk of gum disease that is associated with missing teeth. If you are a missing several teeth, a dental bridge may be the best option for you.
