We have all been told to brush our teeth and floss twice a day to maintain healthy teeth but that is just one part of proper dental care. Brushing and flossing are essential but cannot be relied on alone because of hard to reach areas and plaque buildup that cannot be removed by a tooth brush and floss. In order to prevent serious issues such as tooth decay and gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis), a professional dental cleaning should be scheduled at least twice a year in addition to routine brushing and flossing at home.
The dental cleaning procedure is not a big deal at all and we will make you feel comfortable when you visit our NYC dental office. The process involves special tools that our dental hygienists use to ensure that the gums and teeth are cleaned as efficiently as possible.
A cleaning usually begins with the hygienist using an ultrasonic cleaning tool that causes vibrations on the teeth to assist in loosening plaque. The cleaner also utilizes a stream of water that is sprayed over the teeth to help remove the loosened plaque. Additional or significant build-up of plaque will then be removed manually with a scraping tool that will be used to gently scrape off deposits on the surface or between the teeth. This process may cause slight discomfort in some patients but an analgesic can be applied to help alleviate any sensitivity or pain.
Once all the plaque and tartar have been removed from the gums and teeth, the next step is brushing and polishing. The hygienist will apply a special cleanser to a rotating instrument to gently scrub the surface of the teeth and also polish them. After the polishing is complete, the hygienist will floss in between the teeth and may apply a fluoride solution to help protect, fortify, and strengthen the enamel.
There are a lot of different answers when it comes to how often you should get a professional teeth cleaning. The American Dental Association recommends that teeth should be professionally cleaned once a year at a minimum. Most dentists recommend 6 month intervals and some may even recommend 3 month intervals. The truth is that it depends on your dental health and even your overall health. If you are prone to developing gum disease or if you had gum disease in the past, more frequent cleanings may be necessary, as will be dictated by your dentist and hygienist.
Brushing and flossing regularly are simply not enough to prevent the onset of serious dental issues.
