Can Porcelain Veneers Give You a Smile Makeover?

Do you have teeth that cause you to be embarrassed and cover your mouth? Maybe you don’t smile as often as you’d like because your teeth are chipped, crooked or have gaps. At the New York City Cosmetic Dentistry Center, we’d like you to know that you don’t have to live with a smile that embarrasses you. You can get a smile makeover by getting porcelain veneers to cover the unsightly aspects of your smile. What are they? Here are the basics that you should know.
What are They?
Porcelain veneers are tough bonds that are attached to your teeth in order to create a new smile. The dentist will first file your teeth to give them a straight, even appearance. Then he’ll apply them to the porcelain layer of the tooth to create a new surface area of your teeth. Once he’s completed the procedure, it will look as if you have a row of beautiful, white and straight teeth. In addition, the bonds will act as a strengthener and give you stronger teeth. And the best part? No one will have to know that you paid for them!
Are They for Everyone?
While porcelain veneers can be used for most people, some people need to talk to the dentist about the possible negatives. For instance, if your teeth are very crooked or crowded, the dentist will have to file into the second layer of your tooth, which is called dentin, and the bonds won’t adhere to them as long as they will to the porcelain layer. In this case, some people opt to first wear braces so the teeth become evenly spaced, and then apply the veneers to finish the look.
