In New York, Dental Bridges Can Give A Long-Lasting And Attractive Solution

December 9, 2013 by Dr. Emanuel Layliev Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are a type of fixed, removable denture made to replace one or more missing teeth. The natural teeth on either side can support them, or they can be supported by implants or by both. But bridges can have a powerful transformational effect on the appearance of a person’s smile by turning spaces and gaps back into healthy, whole smiles.

The New York Center for Cosmetic Dentistry can recommend dental bridges, dental crowns or any of a number of procedures for fixing and correcting problems and restoring natural beautiful smiles. People from all walks of life, including many celebrities, trust us for quality service.

Traditionally, a bridge is created by making a crown for the teeth on either side of the gap where the missing teeth are. Then a false tooth is attached to the crown and set in the space. These crowns, also called caps, are often supported by the natural teeth, but they can also be supported by implants, which are titanium roots attached to the actual jawbone.

If the natural teeth receiving the supporting crowns are healthy, then they will not need any treatment beforehand. However, small parts of the teeth will be removed in order to make room for the crowns. Bridges have usually been made of porcelain fused to metal or ceramic.

There are also other types of bridges. For example, sometimes a bridge will be held in place by a crown placed on just one side of the missing tooth. In other instances, metal wings are bonded to the back of the existing teeth in order to support the bridge, with the false tooth or teeth bonded to the metal framework.

This last kind of bridge is more affordable because it requires less preparatory work to the adjacent teeth, and it does not use crowns. However, these bridges are not as strong as other kinds, because it is only the strength of the bonding that holds them in place.

Having a bridge installed will require at least a couple of visits, if not more, because the teeth must first be prepared and then covered with temporary crowns. Impressions will be made of the teeth, and the actual bridge will be placed at a later visit.

Proper Care Can Extend The Life Of Bridges

In the long run, however, it is worth the time commitment, because bridges can last for years with proper care and hygiene. Flossing under the bridge will help it last longer by protecting the supporting teeth from cavities.
